A parallel campaign for Herman Cain?

Herman Cain has unexpectedly surged into the lead. It’s come as enough of a surprise that he doesn’t have a real campaign, especially not in Iowa or any of the other states that matter. So a handful of Republican operatives want to create one one for him in the form of an independent Super PAC, “Americans for Herman Cain.”

Thanks to recent court decisions on campaign finance, you might see this sort of thing happen on a more regular basis from now on.

“Cain is a top-tier candidate, now he needs a top tier early-state operation,” says Jordan Gehrke, a GOP campaign consultant who worked for McCain in 2008 and helped raise $28 million for Sharron Angle in 2010. “We intend to give it to him, bringing together experienced operatives in the early states who can put together credible operations for Cain in a hurry.”

Gehrke says he hopes to announce soon the involvement of key operatives in a number of early primary states. He says that whereas Cain has largely laid off negative attacks against other candidates, this Super PAC will not.

Here’s the group’s first video offering — in which, strangely, Rudy Giuliani makes a cameo.
