Romney took Newt Gingrich head-on this morning on Fox News, defending his work at Bain Capital and repeated his demand for the former Speaker return the money he earned from Freddie Mac.

“By the way, shouldn’t he return the money that he got from Freddie Mac?” asked Romney, reminding viewers that Gingrich profited from agency that was responsible for bringing down the economy.

Romney said Gingrich was “way off” for attacking him for essentially participating in American capitalism while working at Bain Capital.

“To suggest that there’s something un-American or something wrong about investing in an enterprise that, ultimately, doesn’t succeed bespeaks an extraordinary lack of understanding about how the economy works.” Romney added.

“Unlike speaker Gingrich who spent his life in Washington, I spent my life helping create jobs.” Romney concluded.
