Is Bachmann inoculating Perry from vaccine attack?

Published September 14, 2011 4:00am ET

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is rightly taking some strong criticism for his 2007 executive order requiring young girls to take the HPV vaccine. As National Review’s Kate O’Beirne wrote at the time:

In turning a federal recommendatio into a state mandate, Perry has thrilled the vaccine manufacturer, while acting against the balance of medical opinion … The American College of Pediatricians opposes requiring the vaccination for school attendance … In substituting his own judgment for [parents], Gov. Perry has attempted to intrude on their prerogatives and responsibilities. He has also substituted his own judgment for expert medical opinion.

But now Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., has muddied the waters by adding a completely bogus charge that Gardasil causes mental development problems.
