Democrats’ quick denunciations of the Obama campaign’s effort to tar Mitt Romney’s old private equity firm, Bain Capital, as a “vampire” capitalist outfit, could have a lot to do with the old saying that you don’t bite the hand that feeds.
According to the Sunlight Foundation, Bain Capital has given an average of 69 percent its campaign cash to Democrats over the past decade.
And despite Romney’s place at the top of the GOP ticket this year, Bain still has given 70 percent of all of its campaign donations to Democratic candidates and campaign committees. The Democratic National Committee has received $154,000 and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has received $130,800 from Bain Capital despite the attacks on the firm.
Since 2004, the DNC has received a total of just under $690,000 in donations from Bain Capital. And President Obama ranked second after Mitt Romney in 2008 in terms of Bain’s campaign largesse, receiving $95,270 in donations. Obama ranks third overall this year in terms of Bain Capital’s political donations, receiving $39,778.
Bain Capital has given heavily over the years to prominent Democrats such as 2004 Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry, Sen. Al Franken, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, former DNC Chairman Tim Kaine , former Rep. Harold Ford, who defended the firm in the wake of the Obama campaign’s “Vampire” ad , and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton among others.
In the 2000 election cycle, Clinton was the single largest recipient of Bain donations, exceeding what it gave to George W. Bush’s campaign.
