For Romney, it’s definitely not over yet

If you’d asked me three months ago, I would have bet good money that Mitt Romney was the one man who could never become the GOP nominee next year. The reason was simple: RomneyCare. He had implemented Obamacare in his state before Obamacare was uncool. It was like Kryptonite.

Now, I’m not so sure. He’s handled the issue as well as anyone could hope so far, at times to my dismay. And he continues to hold his own in New Hampshire, actually improving his position. His chief competition, Rick Perry, has proven somewhat disappointing so far.

For his first answer in tonight’s debate, Romney took a fairly pointed question on his economic plan (it was called “timid”) and turned it around into a well-received attack on President Obama — a tactic that has worked wonders so far for Newt Gingrich.

With a good enough performance, and another merely adequate or sub-par showing by Perry, Romney could really revitalize his campaign effort. For now, he finds himself in the position of the NFL team that can make the playoffs but doesn’t control its own destiny. But that’s a lot better than I ever expected him to do.
