On MSNBC last night HDNet’s Dan Rather told host Rachel Maddow that the winner of the presidential election would be the candidate who could prove he was the most “optimistic” political figure leading America forward.
“That’s what Ronald Reagan in 1980,” Rather said. “And let’s keep in mind that President Obama, who, while he widely differs with Ronald Reagan on policy, he’s a close student of Reagan the politician, we know.”

Rather noted that the Bush’s endorsement of Mitt Romney was meaningless in today’s Republican party.
“The Republican party of President George H.W. Bush is light years away from the Republican party today,” Rather affirmed. “He would be considered, today, a leftist, socialist, or something worse, and petty for a left.”
Rather also confirmed for Maddow that while in Congress, the elder Bush’s nickname was “rubbers” because of his adamant support for contraception funding.
“I still can’t believe that here in the second decade in the 21st century, in a presidential campaign, that we’re talking about contraception,” Rather said. “Do you know any woman of any race, creed, color, or religion who doesn’t use some form of birth control?”
