In September, a small school was being run in Afghanistan by U.S. Marine Capt. Jason Armas, with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marine out of Hawaii. The school had become a target of the Taliban, which threatened those who attended classes. The outdoor school, covered by a tent to shelter students from the the desert sun, was a trek for many of the villagers who live in the area. By late September, only a handful of students were attending. When Armas asked why, a young boy said “they are afraid.”

  But Armas said via e-mail to The Examiner that students are returning to the school, and for the first time a female has attended.
