Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is angry that the Libyan rebels have so far refused to hand over the only person convicted in the Lockerbie bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 and sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Hillary Clinton urging the United States to withhold aid to the group unless they hand him over.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was released from a prison in Scotland on compassionate grounds two years ago after he was given three months to live.

He’s now living in Libya, reportedly in a coma. Libya’s National Transitional Council said Sunday it would not extradite al-Megrahi.Clinton is headed to Paris to attend an international conference on ways to help the rebels.

“If the Libyan government continues to shield this convicted terrorist from justice then they should not get one more cent of support from the United States,” Schumer said in the letter. “We put American lives and money on the line to help the Libyan people secure their freedom. It’s time the Libyan government lives up to its commitment to create a free and accountable society by handing over al-Megrahi so that justice can finally be done.”
