Republican senators attacked President Obama today for circumventing the law with his attempt to prevent defense contractors from mailing layoff notices before the election, in compliance with the WARN Act.

“It is exhibit A in the march toward an imperial presidency,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told National Review today. “We are in danger of being no longer a rule of law nation. It’s a mini-coup.”

Graham was responding to the Office of Management and Budget telling contractors that it would pay their legal fees if employees sue over their failure to send layoff notices 60 days before the automatic defense cuts in sequestration take place.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., also hit Obama on the issue. “President Obama is telling defense contractors to ignore the law so that those layoff notices will not be delivered before the November elections,” he said in a statement, per The Washington Times. “I will do everything in my power to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to compensate contractors who do not comply with the law.”
