When asked about the government bailouts of Wall Street and the auto industry, Rick Santorum argued against all government bailouts at the Economic Club of Detroit today.
Santorum said that he was consistently against all government bailouts, and blamed President Bush for “setting the precedence” for government intervention in the economy beginning with Bear Stearns.

“I actually blame president Bush more than I do President Obama,” Santorum said, “President Obama was only following suit.”
Santorum added that Romney only opposed the auto bailout, but supported the Wall Street Bailout.
“I know that Governor Romney blames the Obama administration, and the reason he does is because he supported what the Bush administration did.” Santorum said.
Santorum argued that the free market solution would have worked, as it did with the steel industry. “What they should have done is let the market work,” he said.
“Would the auto industry be different that it does today? Yes it would be,” Santorum continued, “Would it still be alive and well? I think it would be alive and equally as well if not better.”
