President and First Lady Michelle Obama will host a “tribute” dinner at the White House for veterans of the war in Iraq on February 29, the White House announced today.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said that the dinner will be more egalitarian than “state-style” dinners. “This dinner — an expression of the nation’s gratitude for the achievements and enormous sacrifices of the brave Americans who served in the Iraq War and of the families who supported them — will include men and women in uniform from all ranks, services, states and backgrounds, representative of the many thousands of Americans who served in Iraq,” the White House Press Office explained in a statement.
Carney said today that the White House was coordinating with the Department of Defense, but could not provide any more details on the event.
