Senate Dem suggests tax hikes = election posturing

President Obama’s latest stimulus proposal, unveiled before a joint session of Congress, has drawn fire from Republicans as a campaign stunt rather than economic platform, and now even Senate Democrats have criticized the tax increases in Obama’s latest plan.

Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., in a Politico/Virginia Pilot report, challenged Obama’s willingness to eliminate oil and gas subsidies. “That offset is not going to fly, and he should know that, “Landrieu said. “Maybe it’s just for his election, which I hope isn’t the case.”

Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., also criticized the tax increases in President Obama’s plan, calling them “terrible.” Webb said that “We shouldn’t increase taxes on ordinary income . . . There are other ways to get there.”

Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., however, believes that Congress should investigate oil companies and eliminate oil subsidies rather than focus on Solyndra, the solar energy company that went bankrupt despite a $535 million loan guarantee from the Obama Administration.
