Increasingly these days, you may see the term “The College Bubble,” suggesting that at some point, our culture might develop some price sensitivity about college. I’ve written a few times about how I think college is overrated, but liberal blogger Matt Yglesias really drives it home with this post about Stanford offering its engineering courses for free online.
Technology lowers the barriers to getting an education. This should bring down college costs, right? As Yglesias puts it:
one way or another, the current paradigm, where it’s cheaper and easier than ever to learn something but harder and more expensive than ever to get a degree, isn’t going to persist.
