What do Ashton Kutcher, Shaquille O’Neil and Newt Gingrich have in common?
A must-follow Twitter handle, according to Gingrich aide R.C. Hammond.
“Twitter users follow Newt the same way they elect to follow Ashton Kutcher, Shaquille O’Neil or John McCain,” Hammond wrote Wednesday in an e-mail defending the authenticity of Gingrich’s online following.
After Gingrich boasted that he has six times more Twitter followers than any other Republican candidate for president, reports emerged that the former House Speaker has been buying off thousands of followers.
“At no time has the campaign or Gingrich Communications employed an outside group to inflate the number of followers of @newtgingrich,” Hammond wrote. “Any accusation of the kind is a lie, a smear and unsubstantiated.”
