Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a terrorist connected to al-Qaeda was sentenced today to life in prison for his attempt to detonate a bomb on an airplane in Detroit, Mich., on Christmas Day 2009, the Justice Department (DOJ) announced today.
“As this investigation and prosecution have shown, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is a remorseless terrorist who believes it is his duty to kill Americans,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement. “For attempting to take the lives of 289 innocent people, he has been appropriately sentenced to serve every day of the rest of his life in prison.”
Abdulmattab tried to detonate a bomb hidden in his underwear on Northwest Airlines flight that landed in Detroit. The al-Qaeda terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the attack. The bomb malfunctioned, starting a fire, and passengers overpowered him.
