President Obama invoked the shooting in Aurora, Colo., to justify calling for a congressional ban on assault weapons and impose a ten-round limit on magazines.
“Congress should restore a ban on military-style assault weapons and a ten round limit for magazines,” Obama said during his briefing today. “Weapons designed for the theater of war have no place in a movie theater.”

He said that James Holmes, the shooter in the Aurora theater, was able to wound 70 people and kill 12 because of the capabilities of the AR-15 combined with high-capacity magazines. “Protecting our children from harm shouldn’t be a divisive one,” Obama said at the beginning of his remarks.
The president also slammed lawmakers who might oppose such a ban. “What’s more important?” he asked. “Doing whatever it takes to get an A grade from the gun lobby that contributes to their campaign or giving parents some peace of mind when they drop their child off for first grade?”
