White House: Please don’t lose your mind over the census

Gibbs: It’s “remarkably crazy.” (ap photo)

Are you following the general madness over the 2010 Census? Are you part of it? Conservative blogger Erick Erickson is getting the most play for saying on CNN that if anyone from the American Community Survey makes the mistake of knocking, he will “pull out my wife’s shotgun and see how that little ACS twerp likes being scared at the door.”

Fighting words! Have you sent your form in yet? Do you plan to? Beltway will do it but is guilty of procrastinating (which will not surprise her editors nor the landlord).

We have, however, found a peculiar fascination with the blog maintained by Robert M. Groves, director of the U.S. Census Bureau. Groves has enabled comments on his blog! Always fun, and particularly with emotions over the census running particularly high this year:

Why? Why should i fill out this form. Why should I fill out this form when I don’t have rights in this country as everyone else does. I am a Native American Gay Male. my husband and I are not able to take advantage of all that is offered to everyone else. So why should I stand up and be counted for someone else’s benefit.

and:

I just want you to know that I and my family feel very offended on question #8. I am a Mexican American, but by you guys using “Chicano” is very offensive that is a slang word for a Mexican, Mexican American. I see you don’t put “White,”White American” or “Okie”. Also, Negro is not nice for Black, African American. I feel you need to correct this situation next time you send out the next census.

Thank you

more:

Why are you segregating Spaniards!! as latino/hispanic?

Are they not on the European continent??

Last time I checked they are european cuacasians!!

This is discriminatory and requires a law suit

Hmm:

I have received the form. NO WHERE on the form or on the instructions does it say WHEN to return the form.

Today at the White House, press secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about Erickson’s remarks and whether the administration is concerned at all. Gibbs replied:

Obviously the Census determines the representation you have in what we call representative democracy. I think it’s why somebody like Karl Rove, who obviously I and others in this administration have disagreed with for going on many years, understands that the lunacy of ripping up your Census form or not sending it in or, God forbid, the remarkably crazy remarks of somebody that would threaten somebody simply trying to ensure that they’re adequately represented in this country.

These days it never ceases to amaze you — and usually it’s only trumped by what somebody will knowingly say tomorrow about — I think it was Lincoln who said, “Better to be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.”  I think that would be my advice.
