The Romney campaign helpfully reminds reporters of what Texas Gov. Rick Perry, R, said about Medicare Part D in his book, “Fed Up!”
“Washington Republicans simply blew the opportunity to demonstrate what conservatism is all about, and why it works … Medicare Part D: While putting the federal government in the pharmacy business, Medicare Part D just expanded a broken program further and increased unfunded liabilities by $17 trillion.”
Perry is, of course, correct. His statement tonight that he would not repeal Medicare Part D does not really contradict this, though. It would be impossible to repeal Part D at this point because it has supplanted all alternatives. The best conservatives can hope for now is to make the rest of Medicare look more like Part D, which would be a significant improvement.
