President Obama’s spokesman defended Vice President Joe Biden’s assessment of the questions regarding Newt Gingrich’s character, adding that voters will have to define “character” based on their personal judgements in choosing a candidate to support.
“It’s up to voters to decide and voters make decisions based on a variety of criteria,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said when asked if Newt Gingrich’s past marriage problems should influence voters’ decision-making. “I’m sure that there is a ‘totality’ to it,” Carney added, quoting Biden. “I think books and studies show that some voters make judgements based on character, but you have to define what character means for you as a voter.”
“Look this is quicksand, and I think that Newt Gingrich, as we all are, is going to be judged by the voters in the primary on the totality of who he is, and that includes everything,” Biden said this morning when asked about Gingrich’s recent ex-wife controversy. “People make judgments about our character. They make judgments about our positions. I just don’t have any comment.”
