We’ve just let the cat out of the bag — the Washington Examiner will be co-sponsoring the August 11 GOP presidential debate in Iowa:

FOX NEWS AND WASHINGTON EXAMINER TO PRESENT IOWA REPUBLICAN PARTYPRESIDENTIAL DEBATE ON AUGUST 11
FOX News and The Washington Examiner, in conjunction with the Iowa Republican Party, will present the first Iowa presidential debate on August 11th. The debate will take place at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and will set the stage for the Iowa Republican Party Ames Straw Poll on August 13th.

It’s going to be an interesting summer for the Republicans. By the time this debate happens, there probably won’t be any more questions about who is getting into the race — and I refer not just to Sarah Palin, but also to Jon Huntsman. We might also by then have a clearer idea of which minor candidates manage to gain traction and become serious contenders. Is Michele Bachmann for real? How about Herman Cain?

The debate will also be critical for the two gentlemen in the photograph. Will Tim Pawlenty find a way of distinguishing himself, or will he remain a single-digit wonder? Will Mitt Romney find a strong rebuttal to charges that his health care reforms in Massachusetts are identical to Obamacare?

Also, the dismal economic realities that we cite in today’s editorial will have played out further, one way or another. This will give the GOP hopefuls a better sense of their chances of knocking off President Obama, who can hardly afford another “Recovery Summer.”
