‘Sabotage’: Railway bridge collapses, explosions heard, and fires break out in Russia

Unexplained explosions were heard, fires broke out, and a railway bridge collapsed near the Ukrainian border in Russia on Sunday and early Monday morning in three separate incidents, according to Russian officials.

One person was reportedly injured after a large fire engulfed a Russian military facility in the Belgorod region of Russia on Sunday, according to the region’s governor. Belgorod shares a border with northern Ukraine. No explanation was given for the cause of the fire by regional officials or the Russian Defense Ministry. The fire was followed by reports of explosions in the same region on Monday. In another region of Russia bordering Ukraine, a railway bridge collapsed on Sunday in what the governor is calling an act of “sabotage.”

“Today, at about 11:20 am, on the 67th kilometer of the Sudzha-Sosnovy Bor railway, a partial collapse of the bridge structures was discovered,” Roman Starovoit, governor of Russia’s Kursk region, said in a Telegram post on Sunday. Starovoit later shared photographs of the bridge “where the sabotage took place today.”

No injuries were reported in the bridge collapse, and it is unclear whether Starovoit was accusing Ukrainian forces or domestic actors of being responsible for the incident. The Ukrainian military has not commented on the collapse of the railway bridge.

RUSSIA CLAIMS IT DESTROYED US WEAPONS IN UKRAINE AIRFIELD ATTACK

On the same day, in the neighboring region of Belgorod, the region’s governor reported that a fire had broken out at a Russian Ministry of Defense facility. The governor also claimed that seven homes had been damaged by the fire as well. An explosion was heard before the fire, according to media reports, and video reportedly of the fire shared on social media showed a large plume of smoke rising into the sky.

The fire at the Belgorod facility was followed by more reports of explosions early Monday morning. Belgorod’s governor confirmed two loud explosions in the region but said that “there are no casualties or damage.”

The sound of a loud boom could be heard on videos shared on social media reportedly from the Belgorod region, where active air defenses were reportedly in place.

Last month, Russian officials accused Ukraine of attacking a fuel depot in Belgorod with helicopters and opening fire on several villages near the border in the region.
