Russia claims it destroyed warehouse loaded with Western weapons in Ukraine

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed on Sunday that it destroyed a warehouse in western Ukraine stocked with weapons supplied by the United States and the European Union.

Russian forces targeted buildings in the Ternopil region with four Kalibr cruise missiles fired from a ship in the Black Sea, according to Ukrainian officials. Four five-story buildings were destroyed and 22 people were injured in the airstrike, according to the governor of Ternopil. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied that any of the buildings destroyed were legitimate military targets.

“High-precision long-range sea-based Kalibr missiles near the village of Chortkiv, Ternopil region, destroyed a large warehouse of anti-tank missile systems delivered to the Kyiv regime from the U.S. and European countries, man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems, and artillery shells for weapons systems,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said on Sunday, according to Interfax.

The Russian Ministry of Defense released video footage of the four cruise missiles being launched from a warship.

Video shared on social media reportedly of the site of the missile strikes showed thick black smoke and flames rising into the air as air raid sirens alert residents in Chortkiv.

Ternopil Gov. Volodymyr Trush said on Telegram that the fire was the result of a gas leak caused by the strike. He did not mention any weapon stockpile being destroyed.

In his nightly address on Sunday, Zelensky blasted the Russian attack and said there was no “tactical or strategic sense” to it.

“After the missile strike at the Ternopil region, 10 people are still in hospitals. There was no tactical or strategic sense in this strike, as in the vast majority of other Russian strikes. This is terror, just terror,” the Ukrainian president said.

He added that a 12-year-old girl who had fled fighting in the Kharkiv region was injured in the airstrike.

Zelensky also said in his address that Russia has fired 2,606 missiles at Ukrainian targets since the Feb. 24 invasion.

Russia has launched several cruise missile attacks on cities in western Ukraine, some near the Polish border, since the start of the war in an effort to stop the flow of weapons and ammunition into Ukraine.

In March, multiple Russian cruise missiles struck an aircraft repair facility adjacent to the city’s international airport, according to Ukrainian officials.

The Yavoriv International Center for Peacekeeping and Security just outside of Lviv was also targeted by cruise missiles in March, killing more than 30 people.
