The Defense Department issued a new directive Thursday to remove immediately as many as 1,000 transgender troops in the military and give others 30 days to self-identify.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court gave room to the Trump administration to enforce its ban on transgender people in the military. In response, the Defense Department announced it would begin to go through medical records to identify others.
