Howard University begins athletic probe

Howard University suspended some of its athletes and began a review of what the university called “an internal investigation of possible NCAA rules-violations.”

One member of Howard’s bowling team told the Washington City Paper that the school is investigating issues surrounding textbook vouchers given to athletes.

Howard allowed athletes to spend leftover money from the vouchers on anything, which may have violated NCAA rules, and the university now wants the money back before it allows athletes to register for courses.

A Howard spokeswoman said, “Most teams will compete as scheduled. We are working diligently to fully resolve this matter as quickly as a possible. In order to protect the integrity of this review, we are unable to share additional details at this time.”
