SAN JOSE, Calif. — Three students at San Jose State University are facing misdemeanor hate-crime and battery charges after authorities say they harassed a black roommate by outfitting their dormitory room with a Confederate flag and a racial epithet was found on a board.

The San Jose Mercury News reports prosecutors filed the charges late Wednesday against Logan Beaschler and Collin Warren, both 18, and 19-year-old Joseph Bomgardner. They each face up to a year in jail if convicted.
