Friends and family of Brian K. Betts are hosting a Remembrance and Celebration of Life Festival in honor of the former D.C. middle school principal who was shot to death inside his home on April 15, 2010. During his two years as principal at Shaw Middle School at Garnet-Patterson, Betts was praised as energetic and devoted. Former D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee often pointed to Betts as an example of the school system’s success. Betts had previously served as a teacher, coach and eventually principal during nearly two decades of work in Montgomery County Public Schools. All proceeds from the event, held April 16 in Fort Reno Park at 2 p.m., will go to the Brian K. Betts Foundation, which his family began in his honor. – Ben Giles
