The Florida State Board of Education on Friday approved a motion to teach the dangers of communism in its Kindergarten through 12th-grade education system.
The policy follows in the footsteps of a bill Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law in 2022, which required public schools to recognize Nov. 7 as “Victims of Communism Day.”
“It’s important for kids to know about communism and what it’s done because it’s an ideology that has failed everywhere in the world. This system is also anti-American, it’s contrary to everything the founding fathers believed in,” Sweetwater City Commissioner Ian Vallecillo told the Washington Examiner. “If the ideology relies on people being killed or imprisoned, the ideology will kill or imprison people when it’s in power.”
The new “History of Communism” standards will be implemented in the state’s public education during the 2026-2027 school year. The policy requires public institutions to teach about communist regimes and how their victims suffered under their rule through poverty, starvation, migration, systematic lethal violence, and the suppression of speech and religion.
“Communism has led to totalitarian regimes, starvation, and a ruling class that oppresses everyone. It’s an ideology that can only exist without opposition,” Vallecillo said. “It’s a collectivist system that in order to succeed requires everyone to give up their individual freedoms.”
“Only the positive side of all the ideologies of what is shown in schools, and it can give students the wrong idea about communism. Kids need to know that maybe this communism thing sounds good on paper, but it doesn’t work when it’s applied.”
Vallecillo expressed support for passing similar legislation at the federal level, citing his concern that the Democratic Party is slipping further to the left.
“It’s not a surprise that blue cities and states have voted blue, but it is concerning that they are electing openly socialist and communist candidates,” Vallecillo declared. “The Department of Education has been weaponized by the left, and we need to fight back.”
“Kids might want to be a communist, but once they know the reality, they might not want to be a communist. Kids need to be taught the truth about that system. They need to understand what many of their grandparents fled. It’s a system that’s doomed to fail,” he added.
The newly enacted legislation mirrors a nationwide attempt to instill more conservative values in classrooms.
This year, Oklahoma’s State Legislature mandated school districts to review lessons and identify whether teachers were making students feel guilty about their identity.
OKLAHOMA TO TEACH FRAUD OF MAIL IN VOTING, 2020 ELECTION DISCREPANCIES
Ryan Walters, the former School Superintendent in Oklahoma, established an Office for Religious Liberty and Patriotism in 2024 and encouraged schools to implement a Bible in every classroom.
The state required for the 2025-2026 school year that public high school students learn to identify “discrepancies” in the 2020 election results. The Oklahoma State Board of Education noted examples that include “the sudden halting of ballot-counting” in select cities across key battleground states,” batch dumps, “an unforeseen” record number of voters, and the “unprecedented contradiction” of bellwether county trends.
