US officials stationed in China warned about brain injuries from ‘abnormal’ sound and pressure

U.S. government employees stationed in southern China were warned Wednesday about reports of “abnormal sensations of sound and pressure” that pointed to a mild brain injury.

The health alert issued by U.S. officials comes after an official stationed in Guangzhou reported a range of physical symptoms from late 2017 to April 2018 that, after assessment, matched the symptoms of a “mild traumatic brain injury,” a spokeswoman at the State Department told CNN.

“The Chinese government has assured us they are also investigating and taking appropriate measures,” the spokeswoman said.

The State Department’s Wednesday statement indicated that anyone experiencing “unusual acute auditory or sensory phenomena” in China should move away from the source of the sound.

The alert from U.S. officials is similar to a series of unexplained sonic attacks in Cuba that led to the withdrawal of U.S. personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Havana. The source and cause of those incidents from late 2016 to early 2017 is still is a mystery.
