Border Patrol discovers second cross-border tunnel in the last week

Border Patrol agents in Tucson, Ariz., on Tuesday announced the discovery of a cross-border tunnel from Mexico to the U.S.

Although the 80-foot-long tunnel appears to be incomplete, officials said it would likely have been used by transnational criminal organizations to smuggle narcotics into the U.S., according to a press release from the Homeland Security agency.

The Border Patrol said it was first made aware of the tunnel by the Mexican government, which contacted the Nogales Border Patrol Station to tell them it originated in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.

Tucson Sector agents have uncovered more than 115 tunnels since 1990.

The discovery comes less than one week after California Border Patrol officials found a 400-foot-long tunnel that stretched from Mexicali, Mexico to Calexico, Calif. Officials arrested four individuals involved in smuggling drugs into the U.S. through the tunnel.

NOTE: THIS STORY HAS BEEN UPDATED TO CORRECT THE NUMBER OF TUNNELS DISCOVERED SINCE OCTOBER
