U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is moving forward with a plan to provide liability insurance for state and local police who assist the federal agency with immigration enforcement, according to a new report.

If successful, the move could ease the possible legal burden on nonfederal police and encourage more law enforcement departments to cooperate with ICE and partner through 287(g) agreements, which allow ICE to deputize local and state police to carry out select immigration duties.
