Donald Trump’s infamous comments about Mexican immigrants continue to haunt him, this time in the form of a scathing Univision op-ed written by singer Ricky Martin.
The op-ed was written in Spanish, so all quotes were translated into English via Google.
“The fact that a guy like Donald Trump, candidate for president of the United States for the Republican Party, has the guts to continue harassing … the Latino community makes my blood boil,” Martin wrote.
The Puerto Rican pop star called Trump out on the way he talks about immigration and the Latino community.
“From the outset his intention was clear: Basically say atrocities and lies to remain relevant in the public eye, by votes or just to stay in the media radar,” he wrote.
Martin called Trump’s comments “racist, absurd” and accused them of being “anchored in a low xenophobic rhetoric and speech that his campaign appears convinced … works.”
He also blasted Trump’s treatment of Univision reporter Jorge Ramos, who Trump kicked out of a press conference yesterday for asking a question without being called on to speak.
Most of all, Martin criticized The Donald’s overall campaign strategy, mainly his outspoken, politically-incorrect rhetorical style.
“Xenophobia as a political strategy is the lowest to what you can get in search of power,” he wrote. “This is an issue that unites us and touches us [to] fight together, not only for us today but for the evolution of humanity and those who come in the future.”
Trump has not only refused to apologize for his remarks, but he has also said he expects to win the Latino vote in 2016. He recently laid out his own immigration plan, which involves building a wall along the Mexican border that would be financed by Mexico.
Martin is not the first Latino celebrity to publicly decry Trump and his comments. Actresses Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria and America Ferrara, among others, have also championed the anti-Trump sentiment.
