Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., charged Wednesday that President Trump’s reluctance to admit Russia’s election meddling has thrown the U.S. into a crisis on the order of the 9/11-level terrorist attacks.
“We are in a 9/11 national emergency, because our country is under attack,” Blumenthal told CNN. “Literally, that attack is ongoing and pervasive, verified by objective and verifiable evidence.”

“Republicans have a historic responsibility as do all of us, because the red light is flashing, as the Director of National Security Dan Coats put it, much as it was before 9/11,” he said.
Democrats have demanded notes from Trump’s private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and have also called on Trump’s translator to testify in Congress to describe what was said.
“This 9/11 moment demands that we do come together, issue a subpoena, not only for the translator and the notes, but also for the national security team that debriefed the president,” Blumenthal said.
Democrats have said Trump’s press conference with Putin in Helsinki show he’s beholden to Russia, and have said Putin might have compromising material on Trump.

Outraged Democrats and others have compared Trump’s press conference with Putin to historic tragedies, including the attack at Pearl Harbor, the attack on Jews during Kristallnacht, and 9/11.
