Steyer on $67m spent: No regrets

Tom Steyer, the environmentalist billionaire who donated nearly $67 million to his NextGen Climate PAC in the 2014 midterm cycle, says he regrets nothing.

“I don’t think we would do anything differently,” he told the New Republic on Wednesday.

Environmental groups responded to the rough midterms by vowing to redouble their efforts.

“It was too low. It’s really expensive to play effectively in politics,” Elizabeth Thompson, president of the Environmental Defense Action Fund, told the Washington Examiner.

Among the states NextGen tried to influence was Florida, where the PAC spent more than $9 million attempting to defeat Republican Gov. Rick Scott.

Steyer said he learned from the experience, and he’ll keep up the fight.

“We said we’re going to try and figure out what the critical states are, try to compete on the ground and try to compete like hell,” he told the New Republic. “That’s exactly what we did. I have no second thoughts whatsoever.”
