Trump, Ivanka defend past slurs against women

Donald Trump and daughter Ivanka defended the Republican presidential nominee’s past derogatory remarks about women during a Thursday appearance on the “Dr. Oz Show.”

Trump told Oz that had he known he one day would run for president, he wouldn’t have appeared on “The Howard Stern Show,” where he engaged in some crude conversation.

“Howard Stern is a friend of mine,” Trump said, asked by Oz to explain his comments. “We have fun together. If I had known I was running for president, I wouldn’t have done his show, or I would have given boring answers.”

Ivanka Trump, who joined the show to tout Trump’s child care and maternity leave plan, said her father can “be a little rough with people” but praised him for hiring women into prominent roles throughout his career.

“I think one of the things that is the ultimate testament is his track record of employing women at the highest levels before it was popular to do so,” she said.

Trump’s proposal for mandatory paid maternity leave in the U.S. is an unusual move for a Republican, as most in the party oppose placing such a requirement on businesses.

He also differed from the typical GOP line when Oz asked about his position on birth control. Trump said he opposes requiring women to obtain a prescription from a doctor before buying contraception.

“When you have to get a prescription, that is a pretty tough thing to climb,” Trump said. “It shouldn’t be done by prescription. I am not in favor of prescription for birth control.”
