Old Town bank robbed

Police are investigating the possibility that the man who robbed the Cardinal bank in Old Town Wednesday morning may have held up the same bank in January.

Just after 11 a.m., an armed man entered the bank at 1737 King St. and demanded money from a teller. He fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one suffered an injury.

The suspect is described as black man with a mustache, wearing a black hooded jacket and carrying a messenger bag. He is estimated to be in his mid to late 30s and about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

A suspect with a “very similar” description robbed the same Cardinal bank Jan. 8, also just after 11 a.m., Alexandria police spokeswoman Amy Bertsch said.

In the January robbery, the suspect brandished a gun and vaulted the teller counter to take cash from the drawers.

Wednesday’s bank robbery marked the third in Alexandria this year. There have been no more than five bank robberies per year since 2002. Bank robberies are a minority of robberies in the city. Of the 202 robberies in 2006, only four were of banks.
