Rhee gives teachers a standing ovation

On her last day as the Chancellor of D.C. Public Schools, Michelle Rhee joined newscasters, musicians and even politicians to salute and honor 662 “highly effective teachers” for their excellence in teaching at the first annual “A Standing Ovation for DC Teachers” at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Monday night.SClBBefore presenting the first excellence in teaching award, Rhee (who was all dolled up in a silver sequin dress) told the audience that while the last few weeks have been “bittersweet,” her time as Chancellor has, “by far been the most rewarding three and a half years than a person can ever have.”

SClB”If I think back on the last three years, the thing that I’m most proud of is the work that we’ve been able to do with our teachers to be able to recognize the incredible work that you do everyday,” she continued.

SClBSeven distinguished teachers were recognized with the “Excellence in Teaching” award for their outstanding work in improving students outcomes.In addition to the award, each recipient also received a $10,000 cash prize.

SClBNBC 4 news anchor Jim Vance hosted the evening which included performances by Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl, who fittingly sang his hit song “My Hero,” and Grammy Award-winning R&B star Chrisette Michele.

SClBSpecial guest appearances were made by second lady Jill Biden, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, new D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson, outgoing D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, newly elected D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, NBC’s “Meet The Press” host David Gregory, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman and former Redskins player Darrell Green.
