For Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, this year’s Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure was a family affair. He, his wife Mona and their kids Emily, 14, Dylan, 12, and Madeline, 6, walked Saturday morning’s 5k to benefit breast cancer research. “Breast cancer touches everybody that we know, whether it be our spouses or our mothers, sisters, aunts, one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer and so it’s just so important that we raise money to find a cure, increase awareness and actually help people who are suffering from this terrible, terrible disease,” Locke told Yeas & Nays while sporting his pink and white Komen T-shirt and wearing a single strand of hot pink beads around his neck.
Locke, who has been nominated to be the next U.S. ambassador to China, said he and his wife would carry on their work for Komen there as well.

Locke and his family were among the nearly 40,000 participants at this year’s race, which turned the streets surrounding the National Mall into a flurry of pink and white. Locke was joined by 34 embassy teams, 35 U.S. government agency teams (including one from his own office at the Department of Commerce) and 45 congressional teams.
Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., cheered on his “Connolly’s Cruisers” before the beginning of the race. “We’re going to knock off Anthony Weiner from the front page,” he joked.
