Former Vice President Dick Cheney will deliver remarks on the embattled Iran nuclear deal early next month.
The speech will take place Sept. 8 at the American Enterprise Institute, the Washington-based think tank announcement Monday.
Cheney, who has previously expressed his concern about the likelihood of Iran adhering to the parameters of the deal, will speak on the “deal’s consequences for the security and interests of the United States and its allies in the Middle East,” according to AEI’s event page.
Cheney’s speech arrives at a critical juncture, just before Congress’ 60-day review period of the Iran deal ends on September 17. Although the Senate’s No. 3 Democrat, Chuck Schumer of New York, announced his opposition along with another prominent Democrat, Bob Menendez of New Jersey, it seems unlikely that Republicans will be able to muster the 11 other Democrats in the Senate to get to 67 votes to override President Obama if he were to veto a congressional resolution disapproving of the agreement.
In a mid-July segment on Fox News, immediately following the announcement of the deal between the U.S., several other world powers and Tehran, Cheney said that “actual use of nuclear weapons” is more likely than Iran’s actual adherence to the agreement, which would aims to quash its ability to develop nuclear weapons.
