MSNBC’s Sharpton: ‘There’s no real energy with Clinton’

MSNBC host the Rev. Al Sharpton said on Monday that it’s possible Donald Trump’s recent attacks on Hillary Clinton will mobilize the Democratic presidential candidate’s supporters, who, Sharpton said, are currently lacking motivation.

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Sharpton discussed charges of sexism leveled between Clinton and Trump over the last week. Clinton had said in an interview that Trump had a “penchant for sexism,” an accusation Trump returned on social media after reports surfaced that Clinton’s husband, former president Bill Clinton, would start helping her campaign.

Sharpton maintained that any attacks on her from Trump would “backfire,” but along the way, admitted that Clinton’s campaign is lacking energy.

“I think the mistake he may be making is he may energize Clinton’s base,” Sharpton said. “You know, a lot of us have been saying there’s no real energy with Clinton. I think for him to say, in effect, ‘I’ll say what I want about women and bring up your husband’s … indiscretion,’ might be the thing that gets a lot of Democrats and a lot of independents to [rally behind Clinton].”
