CLEVELAND — Donald Trump’s vow to protect the gay community from violence and oppression was warmly received during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention Thursday, and is finding that same reception among socially conservative lawmakers.
“His position on the gay community was perfectly legitimate,” Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., told the Washington Examiner.

The Alabama senator said he supported Trump’s vow not to allow members of the LGBT community to be targeted as a result of their lifestyle choices, and said he would not allow anyone to be abused or discriminated against based on their on their sexual orientation.
In the wake of the Orlando shooting, Donald Trump has touted himself as “a better friend of the LGBT community” than Hillary Clinton.
