Washington Post urges Dems to support Price nomination to lead HHS

The Washington Post is calling on Senate Democrats to support Republican Rep. Tom Price as President-elect Trump’s pick for secretary of Health and Human Services.

The paper’s editorial board on Wednesday night said Price has shown a seriousness on healthcare policy and that Democrats should be open to debating him when he’s confirmed.

“Mr. Price is a longtime member of Congress who has shown a particular interest in healthcare policy,” the Post said. “Though we disagree strongly with his Obamacare replacement plan, he at least fleshed out his proposal with numbers and legislative text, which is more than many of his colleagues have done. He is qualified to serve in the Cabinet. Democrats should not object to him simply because they dislike the direction he wants to take health-care policy.”

Trump named Price this week as his pick for HHS, a signal that the new president will attempt to make good on his campaign promise to “repeal and replace” Obamacare, a goal that both Trump and Price support.

Regardless of how Democrats vote in the Senate, Price is likely to be confirmed, and can only be stopped if more than a few Republicans oppose him.
