A federal judge on Friday halted a controversial Alabama regulation that could have permanently shut down a popular abortion clinic, according to the Associated Press.
The temporary restraining order against the regulation applies to the West Alabama Women’s Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala., which performed about 40 percent of abortions in the state in 2013, according to the Associated Press. The clinic has been shut down since January but reopened after the ruling.
The 2007 regulation requires clinics only to have doctors with hospital-admitting privileges. The clinic filed a lawsuit over that requirement.
The center was able to comply with the regulation for years, but was unable to meet the requirement after a longtime doctor retired.
