Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., endorsed Bernie Sanders for president Friday.
“I’ll be voting [on March 1],” Welch told the Vermont Edition. “And I’ve decided to vote for Bernie Sanders.”
Vermont votes March 1, Super Tuesday, along with 10 other states.
The in-state endorsement is somewhat significant to the anti-establishment Sanders, who trails Hillary Clinton badly in the endorsement race.
Sanders has the formal backing of only a few congressmen, and failed to secure the endorsement of his Senate colleague, Pat Leahy, and his state’s governor, Peter Shumlin. Both support Clinton for president.
Nevertheless, Sanders holds a gargantuan lead in the polls in Vermont, 86-10, according to PPP’s most recent poll.
“As a superdelegate, I’ll follow through and vote for him when we get to the convention in July,” Welch said.
