Hillary Clinton on Tuesday picked up her 33rd endorsement from Senate Democrats, giving her a huge lead over her closest rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said Tuesday that he supports Clinton.
“As Ohio’s working families continue to recover from the worst economic recession in our country’s history, we need a president who’s committed to growing our economy by lifting up the middle class,” Brown said in a statement.
Clinton was late to oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement that she Initially supported while in the Obama administration. But Brown said her recent opposition was good enough for him.
“From opposing unfair trade deals to fighting for a fair financial system, Hillary Clinton has shown she puts working families first,” he said. “She knows as president that her first job will be creating jobs for the middle class. I am proud to endorse her today because I know she will keep Ohio moving forward.”
Brown’s backing gives Clinton key endorsements from three of the biggest general election swing states: Virginia, Florida and Ohio. Virginia’s Democratic governor and its two senators and Florida’s lone Democratic senator also back Clinton.
FiveThirtyEight’s 2016 endorsement tracker says that while Clinton is now backed by 33 Democratic senators, Sanders, who is currently in the Senate, has zero.
