John Kasich called out Hillary Clinton for having the “gall” to demand that Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder resign, when the former secretary of state has a questionable record herself.
In Sunday evening’s Democratic debate in Flint, Mich., both Bernie Sanders and Clinton called for Snyder’s resignation for his administration’s response to a lead water crisis in the city that left its tap water undrinkable. It was the first time Clinton called for the Republican governor to leave office.
Kasich, speaking Tuesday evening to the Oakland County Republican Party in Michigan, said “Of all the people in the world to call on somebody to resign.”
“She is the definition of gall,” Kasich said of Clinton, adding, “Talk about stepping down and resigning — we’ll get to that in the fall, believe me.”
Clinton’s campaign for the Democratic nomination has been weighed down by an ongoing investigation into a homebrew email server she used as secretary of state. Over the course of an investigation into the server, over 2,000 emails have retroactively been classified by the State Department.
Kasich attacked Clinton earlier in the day Monday for her stance on Snyder, saying, “You know, that’s demagoguery out of her. I know her and I don’t like that.”
“I’m really agitated with the fact that here she is calling on somebody else to resign with her history, with the history of her family,” Kasich added. “Give me a break, OK?”
Kasich has come to Snyder’s defense in recent weeks, saying that he believes the governor is “doing everything he can” to fix the Flint water crisis.
Snyder has not endorsed any candidate for president, even as the Michigan primary looms on Tuesday.
A poll released from Monmouth University on Monday shows Kasich in a close race for second place in the Great Lake State. The Ohio governor got 21 percent support from primary voters, placing him right on the heels of Texas Sen. Texas Cruz, who got 23 percent. Businessman Donald Trump leads with 36 percent.
