Rubio may announce presidential bid April 13

Sen. Marco Rubio may announce his presidential bid April 13.

The Florida Republican has scheduled an undisclosed event at Miami’s Freedom Tower, which could be used to announce his candidacy, the Miami Herald reported Saturday. It is one of several potential venues he is considering.

His potential rival for the Republican nomination, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, announced his own bid earlier this week, becoming the first major 2016 candidate.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is expected to announce his candidacy on April 7, less than a week before Rubio’s.

Rubio, a Miami-born Cuban-American, has represented Florida in the Senate since 2011 after serving as the Sunshine State’s speaker of the House.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate after Republican incumbent Mel Martinez resigned. Rubio overcame then-Gov. Charlie Crist after trailing him in the double digits at one point in the campaign.

Rubio has fought to curb spending and to reform entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security.

Rubio faced criticism after backing away from comprehensive immigration reform in favor of a piecemeal approach. Critics, including Tea Party activists, criticized him for essentially favoring amnesty.

He serves on four Senate committees.
