White House: Republicans’ Iran letter ‘not a laughing matter’

The White House hit back Wednesday at Republican attempts to laugh off criticisms of a GOP letter warning Iranian leaders not to strike a nuclear deal with the Obama administration.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest highlighted a quote by a Senate GOP aide who said Team Obama “has no sense of humor when it comes to how weakly they have been handling these negotiations,” according to a Daily Beast report.

“They’re right — I don’t think this is a particularly amusing matter,” Earnest told reporters. “It’s not a laughing matter.”

The White House has labeled the letter signed by 47 Republican senators an “unprecedented” attempt to “sandbag” the president amid ongoing international negotiations.

Conservatives counter that such criticism is overblown, saying the letter simply stated opinions that have long been public knowledge.

In the letter, senators warn Iranian leaders that any deal struck with the Obama administration could be scaled back by a future president or Congress.
