Report: White House fence jumper sentenced to 17 months

A federal judge has sentenced an Iraq war veteran to 17 months in prison for jumping the White House fence in September.

Omar Gonzalez scaled the White House fence and ran 70 yards across the north lawn, which made a mockery of the Secret Service and set off a series of investigations into the agency that revealed many shortcomings in White House security.

The 43-year-old Army veteran entered an unlocked door of the mansion before finally being tackled by Secret Service agents in the East Room. When he was captured, he reportedly said that he wanted to tell President Obama that the “atmosphere was collapsing.”
