U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was flown by helicopter Geneva’s main hospital HUG after a biking accident in the French Alps, a development which puts talks on an Iranian nuclear deal in jeopardy.

Kerry, 71, who is in Switzerland for talks on the Iran nuclear program and looming deadline for a final deal, is said to be in stable condition. According to State Department spokesman John Kirby, he suffered a broken leg.

The accident took place in Scionzier, France, which is approximately 25 miles southeast of the Swiss border.

“Paramedics and a physician were on the scene with the secretary’s motorcade at the time of the accident,” a State Department statement said, adding Kerry “is stable and … did not lose consciousness.”

Kerry is known for his love of cycling.

The secretary of state has canceled the remainder of his trip to Europe. He originally planned to head to Madrid for two days, before going to Paris for an international conference on the Islamic State.
