Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer said there’s reason to be grateful that the national news media have been so aggressively oppositional to President Trump.
In a new op-ed, Krauthammer said the separation of powers in U.S. government, along with the press, have tapered the White House’s ambitions and should offer some solace to those who feared Trump would steamroll his opposition.

“Trump is right,” he wrote. “[The media] is the opposition party. Indeed, furiously so, often indulging in appalling overkill. It’s sometimes embarrassing to read the front pages of the major newspapers, festooned as they are with anti-Trump editorializing masquerading as news. Nonetheless, if you take the view from 30,000 feet, better this than a press acquiescing on bended knee, where it spent most of the Obama years in a slavish Pravda-like thrall. Every democracy needs an opposition press. We damn well have one now.”
Trump is under intense media scrutiny on nearly every front, particularly his campaign team’s suspected ties to Russia, and many in the news business have openly stated that Trump’s ascent to the presidency filled them with a renewed sense of purpose.
The White House, meanwhile, has taken a combative approach to the press, dubbing it the “enemy of the American people” and “fake news.”
